Photos & Frames

A home for my photography that feels like an exhibition rather than a feed: every photo appears in black and white and reveals its color on hover, focus, or touch.

Live public site

My role

Took the photographs and designed and built the site.

A dark gallery hall lined with framed black-and-white photographs.

The problem

Photographic work needs a focused, responsive presentation that lets the images carry the experience. A social feed crops, compresses, and surrounds them with noise.

My contribution

I took the photographs and designed and built the site, including the workflow that prepares every original photo for the web.

What I built

The site follows one visual rule: monochrome first, color on intent. The gallery is split into portraits, nature, and couples, each with a frame count and a full-screen lightbox with keyboard navigation. A services page covers photo editing, portfolio websites, custom galleries, and visual curation.

  • A black-and-white-to-color reveal that works with a mouse, the keyboard, and touch.
  • Collection-based browsing with a lightbox.
  • An animated homepage composition, smooth scrolling, and page motion.
  • Lazy-loaded, web-ready images so an image-heavy page stays responsive.

How it works

Original photos are prepared once, then reused across collections without duplication.

  1. Original photos
  2. Web-ready images
  3. Gallery: one collection at a time
  4. Monochrome card → color on hover, focus, or touch
  5. Full-screen lightbox

Key decisions

Make the reveal work for everyone.

Color responds to keyboard focus and taps as well as a mouse, so the core interaction works on every device.

Stay fast on a phone.

Images load as they are needed.

One photo, many collections.

A photograph can belong to more than one collection without being stored twice.

Outcomes & evidence

Photos & Frames is live at photos.davishiggins.com as a purpose-built gallery for my photography.

What I learned

Gallery interactions should support attention to the images without making the photographs harder to reach.
